Women’s Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Medical care centered around women’s sexual, hormonal, and reproductive health is called women’s health. Healthy Horizons Clinic is a primary care practice that offers routine women’s health services for women of all ages, including those in puberty and menopause.

Women face numerous unique health concerns. During women’s health visits at Healthy Horizons Clinic, you can bring up topics like:

  • Menstruation
  • Birth control
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Breast health
  • Pelvic pain
  • Menopause
  • Bacterial infections (e.g. bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections)

Healthy Horizons Clinic makes sure you get the services you need when you need them. They can tell you about what to expect and answer your questions about your health and wellness.

Which women’s health services are available?

Healthy Horizons Clinic provides the routine women’s health services you need to check in on and maintain your sexual and reproductive health. You can access:

Annual women’s health visits

Annual women’s health visits happen yearly and include health history updates and pelvic examinations. You can get other tests during your annual visits according to your age, preferences, and health risks.

Pap smears

A Pap smear is a screening test that happens at many of your annual women’s health visits. During a Pap smear, your provider swabs your cervix for a cell sample. Using the sample, they can detect cervical cancer or cellular changes that might indicate a risk for cervical cancer in the future.

STD testing

STD testing is an important service you can get during your annual visits or on your own accord. A blood test, urinalysis, or swab test can detect STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, and syphilis. Since STDs can infect you without symptoms, regular testing is important.

Breast exams

Breast exams are simple manual examinations to detect breast lumps, which can be early indications of breast cancer. During middle age, you’ll get regular screening tests for breast cancer called mammograms.

When should I book a visit for women’s health?

Starting around ages 13-15, you should come in for your first annual women’s wellness exam. After that, schedule one every year. Yet, they’re not the only reason you might want to book an appointment for women’s health. You can also schedule a visit if you:

  • Have symptoms like pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
  • Want to start or change birth control
  • Need an STD test because of symptoms, known exposure, or a new partner
  • Have an irregular period
  • Experience age-related changes in sexual or reproductive function

Your providers at Healthy Horizons Clinic make sure you stay on top of all the routine women’s health services and make personalized recommendations for additional health services according to your needs and concerns.
